Why AIS?
|
What Am I Doing Now?
I am a current sophomore at N.C. State University double majoring in Political Science with a concentration in international politics as well as Chinese Language and Culture. AIS has helped me realized that I care deeply about international affairs, and has consequently helped shape my majors. I am actively involved in campus life at N.C. State as a member of their University Scholars program, a member of the Caldwell Fellows Scholarship Class of 2019, the founder and President of Adopted Students Union and the Public Relations Director for St. Jude Up 'til Dawn. I spent the past summer studying at Nanjing Normal University and plan on spending my fall semester abroad at Manchester University.

I was in AIS throughout my entire high school career, in that time I learned about globalism, cultural competency, and the importance of being active in my community. Moreover, AIS' focus on service learning aided me in understanding that I am my community; the work and passion that I put into working and trying to improve my community is a reflection of myself and the personification of the values of my community. AIS requires a minimum amount of service learning and community service, but such a requirement is quite beneficial, as in my case, the experiences that I had with service learning have aided me in being accepted in a scholarship program at my university, which focuses on servant-leadership. |
Not only has AIS exposed me to various global experiences in the classroom, but it has introduced to me profoundly unique global narratives through literature that I still reference to this day, such as 1984 by George Orwell and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Finally, AIS brought me in contact with many individuals who differed from me in race and ethnicity, religion, political ideology, and socioeconomic background. This exposure has brought about a greater appreciation of diversity, creativity, and various methods of communication in myself.
